I initially resisted picking up Sex Criminals #1 until a few weeks after the first issue came out. Needless to say I was blown away. Written by Matt Fraction and artwork by Chip Zdarsky, Sex Criminals is a must read for anyone who thinks sex is and can be funny. While the title "may" put some people off, this adult series is a fantastic romp with a premise that is unique (orgasm = stopping time) yet definitely lends itself to the humorous writing style of Fraction. The fourth-wall narrative of the main character in the first issue works great to bring the reader quickly into the story's world, The "criminal" aspect has a certain Robin Hood feel to it - robbing a bank to save a library.
I would recommend also reading the comments and letters section at the end if you pick up the actual comic series. Definitely as funny (if not more funny at times) than the actual series which is saying a lot!
Sex Criminals has gone on to win a 2014 Eisner award AND a 2014 Harvey Award for Best New Series which does not surprise me in the least. They have even taken it to a new level with a book of sex advice called "Just The Tips" coming out in November and they also create website devoted to brimping (brimper.com). And I must say that after seeing Fraction and Zdarsky at HeroesCon this year (their panel and Twitter feeds were HYSTERICAL!) my appreciation and love of the series and it's creators have only grown exponentially. Seriously - someone at HeroesCon actually made crocheted dolls based on brimping and gave it to Fraction & Zdarsky. Their reaction was Just. Too. Funny. (check out their twitter feed from June 20-22 2014)
The first trade paperback volume - collecting issues 1-5 - is available on Amazon. Click the link below to grab yours today!
Also, follow @mattfraction and @zdarsky on Twitter and if you ever get a chance to meet them in person I would highly suggest it. The best and funniest dynamic duo in the comics industry today!
It geeks to me!
