The Missing Blogger

Yeah, I have been a very bad blogger. No new content in a very, VERY long time. But that doesn't mean I haven't been busy.

Just a few things I have been up to (beside the day job):
Read (not in order) Seveneves, Armada, A Dirty Job, Secondhand Souls, Ancillary Justice, Ready Player One, The Martian, and a couple more I can't think at the moment.
Been keeping up with happenings in the Marvel-verse, like Captain Marvel, Spider-Man (minus the introduction of Spider-Gwen, was Spider-verse just bleh to anyone else?), Black Science, The Woods, Bitch Planet, Sex Criminals, Federal Bureau of Physics, Satellite Sam, Hawkeye, Saga, Howard the Duck, Kaptara, Secret War and The Walking Dead to name a few. Yeah, a lot of DeConnick, Fraction and Zdarsky. They rock.

Went to HeroesCon back in June. Lots of good times. Did my first Drink & Draw (one sold!) and attended the Brimp-up, which was AWESOME. Have I mentioned I love Kelly Sue, Matt and Chip?? Again, they rock.

Anyway, I am going to try and (re)start blogging more often. At least on a weekly basis. Maybe. No promises.

Laters!

Pretty Deadly - The Song of Deathface Ginny

I love creator owned comics. Usually they have the most unique stories and art out there. Pretty Deadly, published by Image, is one of those books that is simply  fantastic. Written by Kelly Sue DeConnick and art by Emma Rios, it is a western fantasy that is wonderfully Gaiman-esqe in style.

The story is told by Skeleton Bunny (literally a dead, skeleton bunny) to a Butterfly. The plot centers around the two primary characters: Deathface Ginny the daughter of Death and a little girl, Sissy, whose paths intersect in a unique adventure.  The supporting cast each has a unique history within the story and the imagery surrounding all of them are intriguing. It is one of those stories that pulls you along, and once you are done you want to read again in order to get all the subtle references in the story you might have missed the first time through.

The art of Emma Rios really brings Kelly Sue's story to life. The art compliments the story and gives the story that fantasy feeling. DeConnick and Rios definitely make a great creative team and I look forward to the next volume in the Pretty Deadly story.

The trade paperback volume of the first 5 issues is available here.

Pretty Deadly Volume 1 TP

But, if you have the chance I strongly suggest also hunting down and acquiring the actual 5 issues in the first volume  (because once you read the TPB you'll want to!). The letters page in each issue provides glorious insight into Kelly Sue's writing. For me, knowing where the writer is coming from adds to the story's underlying currents. As a result she has earned a list on my "Creators I Would Love To Spend Time With" along side JMS, Kevin Smith and Stan Lee. She's an amazing writer and I look forward to reading more of her unique writing. Another reason to grab the individual issues is that the first two issues has a short piece on two of the supporting characters' back story. It definitely worth it!

Sex Criminals - Must Read!

I initially resisted picking up Sex Criminals #1 until a few weeks after the first issue came out. Needless to say I was blown away. Written by Matt Fraction and artwork by Chip Zdarsky, Sex Criminals is a must read for anyone who thinks sex is and can be funny. While the title "may" put some people off, this adult series is a fantastic romp with a premise that is unique (orgasm = stopping time) yet definitely lends itself to the humorous writing style of Fraction.  The fourth-wall narrative of the main character in the first issue works great to bring the reader quickly into the story's world, The "criminal" aspect has a certain Robin Hood feel to it - robbing a bank to save a library.

I would recommend also reading the comments and letters section at the end if you pick up the actual comic series. Definitely as funny (if not more funny at times) than the actual series which is saying a lot!

Sex Criminals has gone on to win a 2014 Eisner award AND a 2014 Harvey Award for Best New Series which does not surprise me in the least. They have even taken it to a new level with a book of sex advice called "Just The Tips" coming out in November and they also create website devoted to brimping (brimper.com). And I must say that after seeing Fraction and Zdarsky at HeroesCon this year (their panel and Twitter feeds were HYSTERICAL!) my appreciation and love of the series and it's creators have only grown exponentially. Seriously - someone at HeroesCon actually made crocheted dolls based on brimping and gave it to Fraction & Zdarsky. Their reaction was Just. Too. Funny. (check out their twitter feed from June 20-22 2014)

The first trade paperback volume - collecting issues 1-5 - is available on Amazon. Click the link below to grab yours today!

Also, follow @mattfraction and @zdarsky on Twitter and if you ever get a chance to meet them in person I would highly suggest it. The best and funniest dynamic duo in the comics industry today!

It geeks to me!

Lootcrate - Geeky Awesomeness Delivered To You Every Month

If you are a geek and never heard of Lootcrate, you are missing out.  Think of it as a geek-themed care package for less than an Andrew Jackson each month.

Which themes? So far I have seen dragons, gaming, villians and heroes with a galactic theme coming this month. Some come with custom t-shirts (one came with exclusive Deadpool socks!) and some even have other Lootcrate exclusives, like a special variant cover of Marvel Comics' Rocket Racoon #1 one month, and a fantastic Pop Vinyl exclusive Groot figure another month (see photo). But those aren't the only items that comes with it; other forms of geeky loot fill up the box each month.

Is it worth $20 a month? I think so. And if you haven't tried it I suggest doing it for one month and see for yourself. You can try it by following this link to go to Lootcrate's site to register. If you like it you can save a couple Washingtons by subscribing 3 or 6 months at a time.

Geek out!

Logo Design

Here is a rough draft for my blog's logo/mascot. I am wanting something superhero-ish, but also geeky. Also the design - if it ever catches on - has to be easy to put on shirts or even have little figurines ( I SO need a 3D printer - having a figurine of this would be cool!). So i srarted with a simple design with the rounded Charlie Brown type head, nerd glasses (aka MC Frontalot) and the thicker body with a cape. Logo on chest is simply a diamond like G with telepathic waves radiating out (his super geeky power is geeklepathy!)
